Eat like a local with the best Rhodian restaurants and tavernas
Greek cuisine is regarded among the best in the world. This prestige is well deserved — just talk to anyone who has visited Greece and they’ll likely tell you it was some of the best food they’ve ever eaten.
However good Greek cuisine is, we believe that the food in Rhodes is even better. The main reason for this is the island’s history, as it has been invaded and occupied by several different cultures over the last two millennia, all of whom left their own distinct flavours in the kitchens of Rhodes.
Naturally, an island of this size is bursting with incredible places to eat, and we encourage you to seek your own favourites. But this guide will get you started on your food tour of Rhodes by allowing you to skip the tourist traps and go straight to the tavernas the locals love so much! This is a list of our local hidden food gems, and we’re extremely confident you’ll have some of the best meals of your life if you visit any of the spots on this list.

Ta Marasia
Traditional Dodecanese food
155 Agiou Ioanni, Rhodes, 85 100
Ta Marasia is the complete package, offering traditional Dodecanese cuisine from the finest ingredients. It’s a wonderful location too, as you enjoy your meal in a 100-year-old building nestled in one of Rhodes Town’s cosy neighbourhoods. This is the best spot for anyone looking for the most authentic Rhodian cuisine possible. Nick, the owner of Marasia Taverna, will suggest the best mezedes of the day – this is very common in Greece, as the owners keep an eye on the best ingredients coming in each day and they will adjust their menu to showcase the finest seasonal ingredients. The best thing about this is that you can visit the same excellent restaurant two or three times in a trip and feast on vastly different meals each time!
To Steno
For the family kitchen experience
29 Ag. Anargiron, Rhodes, 85 100
Hidden away from busy crowds, To Steno won’t win any beauty contests from the outside. This unassuming looking taverna houses a great secret inside: some of the best food in Rhodes, all with a warm, almost domestic, sense of hospitality. This is as close as you can get to enjoying a home-cooked meal in Rhodes, unless you manage to befriend a local and invite yourself over for dinner! The food is cooked to perfection, and with no pretence whatsoever. If we haven’t convinced you yet, To Steno also has incredible TripAdvisor reviews.
Griniaris
Incredible, traditionally prepared seafood
161 Agiou Ioanni, Rhodes, 85 100
This idyllic setting in Rhodes Town is even better than it looks — and it looks beautiful, both outside and in. In Griniaris, seafood is the star, with locally caught fish and shellfish prepared just how the locals like it. With ingredients this good, it doesn’t take much to get the most out of the flavours, and that’s where Griniaris shines – simple yet delicious dishes that are beautifully presented. Expect some of the best seafood you’ve ever tasted!
Sakellaris and To Agrino
The best souvlaki in Rhodes
24 Alitroton Ellinon, Rhodes 85 100 and 37 Kon/nou Tsaldari, Rhodes 85 100
We wanted to recommend the best souvlaki in Rhodes, then realised that we couldn’t choose between two places: Sakellaris and To Agrino. You’ll find both in Rhodes Town, at the addresses above, and either one will give you the best souvlaki in Rhodes. If you really love souvlaki, perhaps you should sample both restaurants and tell us your favourite. This is the perfect way to recharge at lunchtime, in between taking in the sights and perhaps catching a few rays.
