Guide to the Wines of Rhodes

wine tasting in medieval town

Rhodes has a long history and tradition in wine making. The privileged Rhodian vineyard, with the multiple microclimates of the region, often produces a low yield of premium quality mountainous grapes.

The white varieties of Athiri, Malagouzia, Muscat and the new and up-and-coming red variety of Mavrothiriko are the most popular Rhodian wine varieties.

Read our guide below or book our popular wine tasting in Rhodes, to taste the mouth-watering future of the Rhodian and Greek vineyard.

White wines of Rhodes

Athiri

The Athiri of Rhodes is an ancient variety of the Aegean.

Athiri is a vine perfectly suited to arid and warm Aegean conditions and able to perform in a large variety of soils. It makes wines with moderate intensity of flavors, mainly focusing on white and yellow fruits, with moderate alcohol levels, soft acidity and a medium body, displaying freshness and vivacity. Athiri is grown all over the Aegean Islands and in the high vineyards of PDO Rhodes.

It is an excellent proposal to introduce people to the aciness of Aegean wines. The lean, not heavy structure and the lack of obvious flavors make Athiri wines suitable for a large range of difficult-to-match dishes. You can easily enjoy it as an aperitif, especially on warm summer lunches. This is a grape variety to be consumed young, within two to three years from vintage, although some five-year-old examples have been found to be delicate but complex. Make sure you find the excellent Athiri when you’re in Rhodes and enjoy it!

White Muscat

Thinking of sweet and dessert wines? Then think of the Rhodian white muscat! Sweet wines are widely available in all the wineries of Rhodes. Outstanding complexity of fragrant rose petal, ripe fruit and bergamot flavours.

Refreshing on the palate with moderate acidity and ageing ability. When aged in oak, sweet versions gain an intricate spiciness while retaining a remarkable freshness.

You can taste a large selection of sweet or semi-sweet white wines around the best Rhodian restaurants and tavernas or even during  Rhodes food tour through the medieval town
